Chapter 24

My heart felt like it was being ripped out of my ribcage. I couldn’t move. Nearly paralyzed watching Connor walk away from me. Probably for good. I’d pushed him too far. Our relationship was too new to sustain this strange situation we found ourselves in.

God! What was I supposed to do?

How had I fallen in love with him so deeply?

So fast?

Yet, what I said about him leaving on tour wasn’t wrong. What I said about being involved with me wasn’t wrong either. They were simple facts. I was a realist. Experience taught me that it was the only way. Why should I have to stop what I’d put in motion to appease his fragile male ego? I’d poured my heart out to him. Explained why what I was doing was important. Not just to me, but to many. My role in all this would actually help stop abhorrent behavior by some of Hollywood’s most deviant power players.

Or maybe, he thought I was finding excuses to push him away?

Either way, I cared too much about him to let him leave like this.

Dashing back to the house, I found Connor stuffing his clothes into his duffle bag. He looked up at me and back down quickly. I swear I saw mist in his eyes. I ran to him and flung myself into his arms. “Connor, my honey.”

“Mae,” he choked, trying to step back from my assault. “I can’t…”

“We can.” I hooked my arms around his neck and threaded my fingers at his nape. “We can.”

Connor rested his hands on my waist and touched his forehead to mine. “No, we can’t. You’re right about me leaving on tour. It killed my last relationship, Mae. I don’t want to do that to you. I don’t want to interfere in your plans either.”

“No, you are misunderstanding me. This isn’t the same thing.” I led him to my bed and we sat, clinging to each other’s hands. “You being on tour didn’t kill your relationship with Jen. She embraced who she was. Her own sexuality. It would have ended no matter what. Either way, our past relationships don’t matter. I want us to be a couple, and I don’t want it to be a secret. Except, right now for me, there is a greater good at stake. And for you too. All I was trying to explain to you was we both have commitments. For a couple years or so.”

“I don’t know what you want from me.” My gentle giant looked so vulnerable it took me by surprise to see him broken up. “This is so complicated. Maybe too complicated.”

“I know. And I don’t have the right to ask this of you.” I rubbed my thumbs over the tops of his hands. “But you’re such a special man, Connor McGloughlin. I want you in my life.”

“Aye. I want that too.”

“So let’s be together. We will find a way to see each other whenever possible,” I vowed. “My show’s on hiatus in three months, I’ll get your schedule and when you have a break I’ll come to you.
